Watznaueria fasciata

Classification: Mesozoic -> Watznaueriales -> Watznaueriaceae -> Watznaueria -> Watznaueria fasciata
Sister taxa: W. barnesiae, W. bayackii, W. fossacincta, W. manivitiae, W. ovata, W. britannica, W. reinhardtii, W. biporta, W. cynthae, W. contracta, W. okadai, W. quadriradiata, W. fasciata, W. rawsonii, C. baticlypeata, W. sp.,

Distinguishing features: Small (3-5 µm) Watznaueria with relatively wide central-area spanned by around 5 parallel transverse bars.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Watznaueria fasciata Wind & Cepek, 1979
Rank: Species
Synonyms: Ellipsagellosphaera fasciata (Wind & Cepek, 1979) Perch-Nielsen 1984

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Watznaueria fasciata *

Distinguishing features: Small (3-5 µm) Watznaueria with relatively wide central-area spanned by around 5 parallel transverse bars.

Morphology remarks: Difficult to definitively identify in LM because the bars are imperceptible. Watznaueria coccoliths with open central areas have been named W. ovata, but these may include W. fasciata that have lost their central area bars or protococcoliths of other Watznaueria species.
