Anthosphaera periperforata

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Holococcoliths -> tubeless -> Anthosphaera -> Anthosphaera periperforata
Sister taxa: S. marginiporata HOL, S. molischii HOL, A. lafourcadii, A. origami, A. periperforata, A. sp. type C, A. sp.,

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
spines only on AACs, CFCs with flat top
spines on all BCs, CFCs with pointed top
BCs with large perforations, CFCs with low point

Taxonomy:

Citation: Anthosphaera periperforata Kleijne 1991
Rank: Species
Variants: Cros & Fortuño (2002) distinguish three types.
Type 1 - spines only on AACs, CFCs with flat top
Type 2 - spines on all BCs, CFCs with pointed top.
Type 3 - BCs with large perforations, CFCs with low point. This is almost certainly a distinct species.

Distinguishing features: Like S. molischii HOL but with prominent, oblique perforations, often conical; CFCs with arched process

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Anthosphaera periperforata *

Morphology remarks: Like A. fragaria, but BCs with large, anticlockwise-oblique, elongate, pores at base of dome, ca 1.5 µm long. CFCs with  medium-sized arched process (ca 1.5 µm). The body coccoliths are unusual in showing strong and consistent chirality.

Size: BCs ca 1.5 µm long
