Acanthoica acanthos

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Syracosphaerales -> Rhabdosphaeraceae -> Acanthoica -> Acanthoica acanthos
Sister taxa: A. quattrospina, A. acanthifera, A. acanthos, A. biscayensis, A. janchenii, A. maxima, A. sp A, A. backmanii, A. cohenii, A. laffittei, A. sp.,

Citation: Acanthoica acanthos Schiller 1925
Rank: Species
Synonyms: Anacanthoica acanthos (Schiller 1925) Deflandre 1952
Notes & discussion: Very similar to A. quattrospina apart from absence of apical and antapical spine coccoliths. it is rarely seen so possibly the observed specimens are simply incomplete A. quattrospina coccospheres. As discussed in Young & Bown (2014) the very close similarity of the A. acanthos and A. quattrospina means that placing them in separate genera is not useful.

Distinguishing features: Like A. quattrospina but lacking spine coccoliths, and rim broader

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Acanthoica acanthos * , ,

Morphology remarks: Coccoliths with broad rim, 24-35 laths, low conical protrusion. See Kleijne (1992) for longer description.
