Sister taxa: Coccolithus, Bramletteius, Campylosphaera, Chiasmolithus, Coronocyclus, Cruciplacolithus, Ericsonia, Solidopons, Birkelundia, Clausicoccus, Craticullithus, Hughesius, Kilwalithus,

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
Small to medium, elliptical placolith coccoliths with broad central-areas spanned by lattice-like grills that are dominated by transverse bars.
Small, elliptical placolith coccoliths with broad central-areas spanned by lattice-like grills that are dominated by longitudinal bars.
Medium to large, elliptical placolith coccoliths with broad central-areas spanned by a plate formed from small non-aligned rectangular elements.
Medium sized, bicyclic placolith with dark outer-cycle, slightly brighter inner cycle and relatively wide central-area (approximately same width as shields). In SEM a central-area net is evident.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Craticullithus Bown, 2010
Rank: Genus
Type species: Craticullithus cancellus Bown, 2005
Notes & discussion: The rim and central structures are similar to Cruciplacolithus and so this genus is placed within the Family Coccolithaceae, although their rim structure is also comparable with coccoliths currently classified within the Calcidiscaceae.

Distinguishing features: Placolith coccoliths with a wide central-area typically spanned by multi-element lattice-like grills or imperforate plates.
