Braarudosphaera sequela

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Braarudosphaerales -> Braarudosphaeraceae -> Braarudosphaera -> Braarudosphaera sequela
Sister taxa: B. bigelowii, B. insecta, B. magnei, B. pentagonica, B. perampla, B. perversus, B. sequela, B. stylifera, B. sp.,

Taxonomy:

Citation: Braarudosphaera sequela Self-Trail 2011
Rank: Species
Synonyms: Braarudosphaera cf. B. hockwoldensis
Notes & discussion: Similar to B. hockwoldensis, which was first described in the Lower Cretaceous Gault Clay (Black, 1973). Bown (2005) tentatively used the name Br. cf. B. hockwoldensis for specimens recorded from the Eocene/ Oligocene of Tanzania. However, the large stratigraphic gap between B. hockwoldensis and B. sequela argues in favor of iterative evolution and that they are two separate species (Self-Trail 2011).

Distinguishing features: Stellate Braarudosphaera with protruding pentalith segments.
