Original descriptions of taxa. For coccolithophores, and many calcispheres, these are pages from the Catalog of Calcareous Nannofossils. In other cases (e.g. non-calcifying haptophytes) the data is directly compiled on this site. The "Catalogue of Calcareous Nannofossils" was compiled by Prof A. Farinacci 1969-1989 and updated by Richard Howe 2000-2016 - see also this page.

Compiled data

Citation: Brachiolithus Noël 1959
Rank: Genus
Type species: Not given. Brachiolithus quadratus Noël (1959) subs. des. by Loeblich & Tappan (1963)
Farinacci catalog page (& compiler): 7018
Language: FR
Notes: jun syn of Nannoconus in KPN85

Whilst the revised B. quadratus illustrated by TEM appears to be a Nannoconus the specimens illustrated by LM in the original decriptions probably are not, since they are described as behaving as single crystals in LM. The drawings are too sketchy to identify and may be of inorganic crystals. Since B. quadratus has been designated the type species the genus is junior synonym of Nannoconus.
