Sister taxa: C. pelagicus group, C. formosus group, C. biparteoperculatus group, C. gigas group, C. sp.,

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
Like Coccolithus pelagicus but the tube cycle may be indistinct and the narrow central area is filled by a two-part oval bar with a transverse suture.
Medium to large elliptical Coccolithus with narrow central area filled or almost filled by a broad transverse disjunct bar.
Small to medium-sized elliptical Coccolithus with narrow central area filled by a birefringent broad, oval transverse bar, which is bright at around 45° to the polarizing direction.
