Calcidiscus leptoporus subsp. leptoporus

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Coccolithales -> Calcidiscaceae -> Calcidiscus -> C. leptoporus group -> Calcidiscus leptoporus -> Calcidiscus leptoporus subsp. leptoporus
Sister taxa: C. leptoporus subsp. leptoporus, C. leptoporus subsp. quadriperforatus, C. leptoporus subsp. small,

Citation: Calcidiscus leptoporus subsp. leptoporus (Murray & Blackman 1898) Loeblich & Tappan, 1978
Rank: sub-species
Basionym: Coccosphaera leptopora Murray and Blackman 1898
Synonyms: Calcidiscus leptoporus type C of Kleijne 1993

Distinguishing features: liths 5-8µm, often weakly elliptical, sutures sharp around central area

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Coccosphaera leptopora *

Morphology remarks: Coccoliths intermediate sized, 5-8 µm, with 15-30 elements; distal shield sutures smoothly curved. The most common form.

Biology & life-cycles: HOL = planar holococcolith with crystallites in hexagonal array (formerly called Crystallolithus rigidus). Combination coccospheres documented by Kleijne (1993), Cortes (2000), and Renaud & Klaas (2001). Also life-cycle transition observed in culture (Houdan et al. 2004). Association discussed by Geisen et al. (2002).

Cultures: strains of this species are maintained in culture, for details see Roscoff culture collection.
