Synonyms:
Variants: Malinverno 2004 recognised four types within C. murrayi based primarily on the sepration of the laths in the central area of the body coccoliths She interpreted this variation as most likely being a case of variable degree of calcification, since the type intergraded and coccospheres with more than coccolith type can occur.

Morphology: Coccosphere dimorphic, broad, tapering rather abruptly at ends with only a few elongate liths. Terminal liths have one end extended into spine. Bars not very regular and often merge into continuous sheet. Liths 2-4 µm long, spines up to 25 µm, coccospheres up to 30 µm.
For identification note that the liths usually are smaller than an E. huxleyi coccolith and/or have overlapping laths.
