Distinguishing features: Medium to large broadly elliptical to subcircular Coccolithus with a broad, open, central-area; tube structure simplified.

Evolution & Phylogeny: Essentially these have Coccolithus rim structure but without development of either the upper or lower inner tube - compare with illustrations in Young (1993). NB The Chiasmolithus consuetus group has similar reduction of the tube cycles and C. bownii might be related to it.

Ecology & Biogeography: Associated with the PETM boundary and suggested to be an opportunistic species that "took advantage of the extreme environmental changes associated with this interval and thrived in these stressed environments" (Jiang & Wise 2007).
