Coccolithus crassus

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Coccolithales -> Coccolithaceae -> Coccolithus -> C. pelagicus group -> Coccolithus crassus
Sister taxa: C. crassus, C. pelagicus, C. eopelagicus, C. miopelagicus, C. latus, C. bownii, C. tenuiforatus,

Citation: Coccolithus crassus Bramlette & Sullivan 1961
Rank: Species
Notes & discussion: The species is discussed in detail by Wei (1993) who notes that it has usually been included in Coccolithus but can be a valuable early Eocene marker.

Distinguishing features: Simlar to C. pelagicus but more strongly birefringent and with raised collar on distal surface.
