Basionym: Coccolithus neohelis McIntyre & Bé 1967
Taxonomic discussion: Two generic assignments have been used for this species; Cruciplacolithus on the basic of central area morphology, with the implication that it is directly descended from this Palaeogene genus; or Coccolithus, with the implication that it is an unrelated homoeomorph of the Palaeogene genus descended from Coccolithus pelagicus. Molecular genetic data (Sáez et al., 2004, Medlin et al. 2008) indicates a deep divergence from Coccolithus and so supports assignment to Cruciplacolithus.

Morphology: Neritic species rarely found in oceanic samples. Coccoliths small (2.2-3.2 µm) with cross in central-area, and a few additional laths on baseplate (see Fresnel 1986). Coccospheres 7.5-9 µm.

Cultures: strains of this species are maintained in culture, for details see Roscoff culture collection.


Ecology & Biogeography: Neritic species, most records from nearshore environment. The original description was from the open ocean, but near land (Bermuda Time series Station)

Biology & life-cycles: Cytology described by West (1969) and Fresnel (1986). Widely maintained in culture but life-cycle transition has not been observed. Motile cells occasionally occur (Fresnel 1986), but these still have hetrococcoliths. Old cells in the stationary phase may produce multiple layers of coccoliths (Fresnel 1986).
