Distinguishing features: Cylindrical nannofossil with median flange, a flaring cone on one side and a circlet of flaring spines on the other

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)

Specimens not identified to species level

Taxonomy:

Citation: Darwinilithus Watkins in Watkins & Bowdler, 1984
Rank: Genus
Type species: Darwinilithus pentarhethum Watkins in Watkins & Bowdler, 1984

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Darwinilithus *

Distinguishing features: Cylindrical nannofossil with median flange, a flaring cone on one side and a circlet of flaring spines on the other

Morphology remarks: Watkins & Bowdler (1984) interpret the conical side as distal and the spinose side as proximal. LM observations (see colour image from Kevin Cooper) indicate that the flange and cone are both V-units and the spines R-units. This supports the interpretation of Watkins & Bowdler that this is a Stephanolithid, with the cone being distal.
