Discoaster kugleri

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Discoasteraceae -> Discoaster -> D. deflandrei group -> Discoaster kugleri
Sister taxa: D. deflandrei, D. calculosus, D. salomonii, D. emblematicus, D. durioi, D. saundersi, D. nephados, D. leroyi, D. kugleri, D. hexapleuros, D. cuspidatus, D. druggii, D. shumnykii,

Taxonomy:

Citation: Discoaster kugleri Martini and Bramlette, 1963
Rank: Species
Variants: de Kaenel et al. (2017) suggests restricting D. kugleri to forms with short rays and to remove less typical forms  into two new species D. hexapleuros and D. cuspidatus.
Notes & discussion: This is a Middle Miocene species but it appears to evolve directly from D. deflandrei rather than D. exilis, intermediate specimens occur.

Distinguishing features: Central-area wide and flat. Free rays short, with notched ends rather than true bifurcations; often thicker than the central area.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Discoaster kugleri *

Morphology remarks: Central-area wide and flat. Free rays short, with notched ends rather than true bifurcations; often thicker than the central area.

Geological Range:
Notes: NN7 (zonal marker), usually co-occurs with D. exilis and D. deflandrei and only forms small percentage of the discoaster assemblage.
Last occurrence (top): within NN7 zone (10.89-11.90Ma, top in Tortonian stage). Data source: Young 1998
First occurrence (base): at base of NN7 zone (0% up, 11.9Ma, in Serravallian stage). Data source: zonal marker (see e.g. Young 1998)
