Variants: Discoaster gemmeus Stradner 1959 - very similar but with rays strongly twisted on one side. Romein (1979) considered many specimens identified by previous workers as Discoaster gemmeus to belong to D. mohleri

Distinguishing features: Medium sized rosette-shaped discoasters; 9-16 rays joined along most of their length with simple broad ray tips.
