Discoaster transitus

Classification: ntax_cenozoic -> Discoasterales -> Discoasteraceae -> Discoaster -> D. musicus group -> Discoaster transitus
Sister taxa: D. sanmiguelensis, D. ulnatus, D. patulus ⟩⟨ D. musicus, D. carneyi ⟩⟨ D. virginianus, D. transitus, D. micros, D. arneyi, D. premicros

Taxonomy:

Citation: Discoaster transitus Peleo-Alampay et al. (1998)
Rank: species
Taxonomic discussion: D. transitus was considered to be a synyonym of D. micros by Raffi et al. (1998) but the species are separated by Bergen et al. (2017) on the basis of central area size. The specimens illustrated by Raffi et al. (1998) have small central areas and so are reassigned to D. transitus. [my interpretation - JRY 2018]

Distinguishing features: Small thick discoaster with small central area, bifurcations nearly touching

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: D. transitus *

Phylogenetic relations: Suggested to be the ancestor of Catinaster coalitus by Peleo-Alampay et al. (1998) and Raffi et al. (1998)
