Gompholithus

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Fasciculithaceae -> Gompholithus
Sister taxa: Diantholitha, Fasciculithus, Gompholithus, Lithoptychius,

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
Medium-sized species (H ca 7 µm, W ca 9 µm) with flat cylindrical outline, consisting of 20 to 30 wedges with a smooth outer surface and a large and deep distal depression with central body.
Large, cylindrical fasciculith that narrows sharply around half way up the column, forming a shoulder.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Gompholithus Aubry in Aubry et al. 2011
Rank: Genus
Basionym: Gompholithus magnus (Bukry & Percival 1971) Aubry in Aubry et al. 2011
Type species: Fasciculithus magnus Bukry & Percival 1971

Distinguishing features: Fasciculiths formed of a single cycle, arguably with central body, deep cavity on one side, no fenestrae

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Gompholithus [no catalog entry yet]

Evolution & Phylogeny: These are the ancestral fasciculiths according to Romein (1979) and separating them, as reccomended by Aubry et al. (2011), makes sense phylogenetically, if Fascilulithus (sensu stricto) evolved from Lithoptychius rather than from Gompholithus.

Notes: Romein (1979), Perch-Nielsen (1985), Steurbaut & Sztrakos (2008), & Monechi et al. (2013) all give these species a similar restricted range in lower NP4
Last occurrence (top): in upper part of Danian Stage (75% up, 62.7Ma, in Danian stage). Data source: Total of range of species in this database
First occurrence (base): in upper part of Danian Stage (69% up, 63Ma, in Danian stage). Data source: Total of range of species in this database
