Helicosphaera HOL confusus type

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Holococcoliths -> flat-topped -> Helicosphaera HOL -> Helicosphaera HOL confusus type
Sister taxa: H. HOL catilliferus type, H. HOL confusus type, H. HOL dalmaticus type, H. HOL ponticuliferus type,

Citation: Helicosphaera HOL confusus type, informal
Rank: Form

Distinguishing features: Liths with 7-10 depressions; pyramidal boss near centre; distinctly thicker than catilliferus

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Syracolithus confusus *

Size: Liths 2-3 µm long; 8-11 crystallites high

Biology & life-cycles: Combination coccospheres with Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type have been observed by L. Cros in the Alboraon Sea (Cros et al. 2000, Geisen et al. 2002). These may have arisen due to malformation or hybridization but suggest that the two forms are very closely related.
