Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Holococcoliths -> flat-topped -> Helicosphaera HOL -> Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type
Sister taxa: H. HOL catilliferus type, H. HOL confusus type, H. HOL dalmaticus type, H. HOL ponticuliferus type,

Citation: Helicosphaera HOL ponticuliferus type informal
Rank: Form
Basionym: Corisphaera ponticulifera Kamptner 1941
Notes & discussion: Nomenclature here follows Young & Bown (2014)

Distinguishing features: Liths with two depressions, extending to proximal surface and separated by a bridge surmounted by a boss.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Corisphaera ponticulifera *

Morphology remarks: The crystalites are in rhombohedral array but it is much less uniform than in Helicosphaera HOL catilliferus type with the rhombohedra tending to be aligned with their longer axis parallel to the edge of coccolith. In LM this results in discrete blocks being present at the ends of the coccolith.

Size: disk 6-9 crystallites high

Biology & life-cycles: Unambiguous combination coccosphere with H. wallichii observed by Couapel et al. (2009)
