Variants:
Synonyms: H. kamptneri (Hay and Mohler in Hay et al., 1967) Locker, 1973 [Helicopontosphaera]. NB This was an alternative name suggested by Hay et al. (1967) on the grounds that the original description of Coccosphaera carteri was likely to have been based on a completely different coccolithophore. This also lead them to propose Helicopontosphaera as an alternative name for the genus. Jafar & Martini (1975) showed this was incorrect, and so that Helicosphaera carteri was the correct name for the species.
Other synonyms (NB the type illustrations of these taxa are so badly drawn it is impossible to say if they vary significantly from typical H. carteri)

Distinguishing features: Medium to large size, flange ends in wing, two inline pores in central-area.

Geological Range:
Notes: The most common extant and Neogene Helicosphaera species, recorded from the present day to Early Miocene.
Vathi (1998) records occurrences from the Oligocene (Zone NP23) in Albania, these are significantly older than the normal FAD but the results are well documented. de Kaenel & Villa (1998) discussed this and described a discrete H. aff. carteri occuring in this time interval. The species as since been described as H. ethologa Bown 2005
