Ancestry: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Heliolithaceae
Sister taxa: Discoasteraceae, Fasciculithaceae, Heliolithaceae, Sphenolithaceae,

Short diagnosis: Discoidal discoasteralids with several distinct cycles including at least one that is birefringent.

Daughter taxa (blue => in age window 0-300Ma) Granddaughter taxa
Discoidal discoasteralids with a wide non-birefringent cycle and at least one narrower birefringent cycle, i.e., narrower than the diameter of the nannolith.

Discoidal discoasteralids with birefringent appearance.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Heliolithaceae Hay & Mohler, 1967
Rank: Family
Notes & discussion: Group of nannoliths closely allied to the discoasters, and probably transitional between typically VR heterococcolith morphology and the more derived, single crystal-unit form of Discoaster.

Short diagnosis: Discoidal discoasteralids with several distinct cycles including at least one that is birefringent.
