Lithoptychius

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Fasciculithaceae -> Lithoptychius
Sister taxa: Diantholitha, Fasciculithus, Gompholithus, Lithoptychius,

Distinguishing features: Complex fasciculiths - formed of two or three discrete cycles; no fenestrae

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-300Ma)
Shaped like a cotton reel bobbin, i.e. cylindrical but broadening at each end. Topmost part formed of discrete cycles
Cylindrical column with narrow waist and a wide, disc-like apical cycle that is crystallographically distinct.
Cylindrical column that broadens distally and a wide, disc-like apical cycle that is crystallographically distinct.
Cylindrical column with a narrower, domed apical cycle that is crystallographically distinct.
Fasciculiths consisting of three distinct structures, including a proximal column, a middle cycle of lateral elements and a distal superimposed mushroom-shaped cone.
Egg-timer-shaped fasciculith of variable size (ca 6 to 8 µm), consisting of a high proximal column and a low and small distal cone forming a cylindrical ring of elements.

Citation: Lithoptychius Aubry in Aubry et al. 2011
Rank: Genus
Type species: Fasciculithus ulii Perch-Nielsen 1971

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Lithoptychius *

Distinguishing features: Complex fasciculiths - formed of two or three discrete cycles; no fenestrae

Morphology remarks: In ell-preserved specimens the column appears fluted, i.e. the contacts between elements are recessed. The recesses are not, however, subdivided horizontally into fenestrae.
