Lotharingius

Classification: Mesozoic -> Watznaueriales -> Watznaueriaceae -> Lotharingius
Sister taxa: Bussonius, Cyclagelosphaera, Diazomatolithus, Lotharingius, Watznaueria, Ansulasphaera, Bibreviconus, Perchnielsenella,

Distinguishing features: Elliptical watznaueriacean coccoliths typically with central-area axial cross, with or without additional lateral bars. Cross usually spine bearing. Extinction figure with nearly straight arms.

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
species with narrow central area
Small (2.5-4µm), broadly elliptical Lotharingius ; central area narrow with spine-bearing axial cross.
Small (4-5 µm) elliptical Lotharingius; central area narrow with transverse cross-bar
Small (3.5-5 µm) sub-circular Lotharingius; central area very narrow with axial cross
species with wide central area
Medium to large (6-13 µm) Lotharingius; central area wide with axial cross and additional lateral bars.
Medium (4-7 µm) Lotharingius; central area relatively wide, with lozenge-shaped longitudinal structure, and additional lateral bars (around 16).
Small (3-5 µm), narrowly elliptical Lotharingius; central area with axial cross and lateral bars (around 12).
Small (ca 3µm) Lotharingius; central area wide with axial cross and lateral bars
Medium (5-7 µm) Lotharingius ; central area filled by a granular plate.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Lotharingius Noël, 1973
Rank: Genus
Type species: Lotharingius barozii Noël, 1973.
Synonyms: Bennocyclus Zweili and Grün, 1974 in Grün et al., 1974.
Notes & discussion: The genus appears to be sub-divided into an improbably large number of poorly differentiated species and to be in need of taxonomic revision or better documentation of the species.

Ferreira et al. (2017) showed that multiple species increase in size between the lower and middle Toarcian, it would be possible to use separate names for the small and large forms but we do not consider that this would aid comprehension.

Morphology remarks: In addtion to the central area differences Lotharingius specimens typically show simpler extinction crosses in cross-polarised light, possibly as result of lower imbrication of shield elements [oral comm. by Mattioli during Jurassic Workshop, Lyon 2016]

Evolution & Phylogeny: Thought to be the ancestral genus of the Watznaueriales, see e.g. Bown (1987)
