Marthasterites furcatus

Classification: Mesozoic -> Nannoliths inc sedis -> Nannoliths inc sed - other -> Marthasterites -> Marthasterites furcatus
Sister taxa: M. crassus, M. furcatus, M. inconspicuus, M. simplex, M. sp.,

Distinguishing features: Ray tips with multiple well-devloped projections

Citation: Marthasterites furcatus (Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954) Deflandre, 1959
Rank: Species
Basionym: Discoaster furcatus Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954
Variants: NB Burnett 1997 proposed the combination Marthasterites bramlettei (Deflandre, 1959) Burnett, 1997, for form with extensions on the end of the arms. Unfortunately, this combination is very problematic since it is a homonym of Marthasterites bramlettei Bronnimann & Stradner 1960 (i.e. Tribrachiatus bramlettei) and therefore invalid (either the taxon should be used as a subspecies or a new name substituted) - see also van Heck (1980 - INA Newsletter 2/1 p.33). [my interpretation - JRY 2019]

Geological Range:
Notes: was used as marker of Turonian/Coniacian boundary but with modern stage concepts occurs in the Early Tuornian (Burnett et al. 1998)
Last occurrence (top): within Campanian Stage (72.05-83.64Ma, top in Campanian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998
First occurrence (base): in lower part of UC6b subzone (20% up, 93.7Ma, in Turonian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998, fig.6.3
