Marthasterites furcatus

Classification: Mesozoic -> Nannoliths inc sedis -> Nannoliths inc sed - other -> Marthasterites -> Marthasterites furcatus
Sister taxa: M. crassus, M. furcatus, M. inconspicuus, M. simplex, M. sp.,

Distinguishing features: Ray tips with multiple well-devloped projections

Taxonomy:

Citation: Marthasterites furcatus (Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954) Deflandre, 1959
Rank: Species
Basionym: Discoaster furcatus Deflandre in Deflandre & Fert, 1954
Variants: NB Burnett 1997 proposed the combination Marthasterites bramlettei (Deflandre, 1959) Burnett, 1997, this combination is very problematic since it is a homonym of Marthasterites bramlettei Bronnimann & Stradner 1960 (i.e. Tribrachiatus bramlettei) and therefore invalid (either the taxon should be used as a subspecies or a new name substituted) - see also van Heck (1980 - INA Newsletter 2/1 p.33)
Synonyms: Marthasterites furcatus furcatus;

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Discoaster furcatus * , Marthasterites furcatus bramlettei * , Marthasterites duplex *

Distinguishing features: Ray tips with multiple well-devloped projections

Geological Range:
Notes: was used as marker of Turonian/Coniacian boundary but with modern stage concepts occurs in the Early Tuornian (Burnett et al. 1998)
Last occurrence (top): within Campanian Stage (72.05-83.64Ma, top in Campanian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998
First occurrence (base): in lower part of UC6b subzone (20% up, 93.7Ma, in Turonian stage). Data source: Burnett 1998, fig.6.3

Plot of occurrence data:

  • Histogram - Neptune occurrence data from DSDP and ODP proceedings. Pale shading <50 samples in time bin. Interpret with caution & read these notes
  • Note to users in China - the diagram may not plot unless you use a VPN since I use google services on the website. If this is a problem please contact me 谢谢.
  • Taxon plotted: Marthasterites furcatus, synonyms included - Marthasterites furcatus; Marthasterites furcatus furcatus; Marthasterites furcatus var. bramlettei; space-time plot :: Samples map :: Parent: Marthasterites
