Classification: Mesozoic -> Podorhabdales -> Biscutaceae -> Boletuvelum -> Palaeopontosphaera patula sensu Lambert 1993
Sister taxa: B. candens, P. patula sensu Lambert 1993, B. sp.,

Distinguishing features: Biscutum-like species with spines varying from low and simple, to tall hollow and distally covered

Taxonomy:

Citation: Palaeopontosphaera patula sensu Lambert 1993
Rank: Species
Notes & discussion: Lambert (1993) described a highly variable Biscutum-like species from Albian laminated sediments off Cameroun. The form with the largest spines is similar to Boletuvelum candens although the simpler forms are more like Biscutum dubium. The name he appied, Palaeopontosphaera patula, does not seem a very good choice since Discorhabdus patulus is a poorly understood Jurassic coccolith and has a flaring rather than a closed spine
