Pappomonas flabellifera

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Papposphaeraceae -> Pappomonas -> Pappomonas flabellifera
Sister taxa: P. borealis, P. flabellifera, P. garrisonii, P. weddellensis, P. sp. type 1, P. sp. type 3, P. sp. type 4, P. sp. type 5, P. sp.,

Taxonomy:

Citation: Pappomonas flabellifera Manton & Oates, 1975
Rank: Species
Variants: AACs have extended rim elements but no process (JRY - unpubl obs / see images)
Notes & discussion: Manton et al. (1976) divided the species into two varieties based on the form of the blades on the process and their geographical distribution:
Thomsen & Ostergaard 2014 separated these two forms as discrete species, based on these characters and smaller size of P. borealis body coccoliths.

Distinguishing features: Central area with concentric rings of crystallites;
CFC process ca. 2 µm high, with long stem supporting two blades.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Pappomonas flabellifera [no catalog entry yet]

Size: Cell 4-6 µm; BCs 1-1.5 µm long

Ecology & Biogeography: Occurs in Arctic and Antarctic (Thomsen & Ostergaard 2014)

Biology & life-cycles: No combination coccospheres observed but Thomsen & Ostergaard (2014) suggest that the  holococcolith stge is most likely to be Trigonaspis minutissima, based on biogoegraphy.
