Papposphaera HOL

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Holococcoliths -> open-tube -> Papposphaera HOL
Sister taxa: Calicasphaera, Papposphaera HOL, Trigonaspis,

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
Coccosphere elongate, varimorphic, CFCs higher and asymmetric, liths are only slightly widened distally.
Coccosphere, spherical, dimorphic, CFCs larger and closed distally. Liths goblet-shaped, sub-circular base, narrow stem strongly flaring distally.
Coccosphere spherical, varimorphic, tubes higher at flagellar pole. Coccoliths with tube, flaring distally.
Coccosphere subspherical, varimorphic, tubes higher at flagellar pole. Coccoliths with long tube, weakly flaring distally

Taxonomy:

Citation: Papposphaera HOL
Rank: Genus
Type species:
Synonyms: These holococcoliths were originally described as a discrete genus, Turrisphaera, but they are now known to be fromed on the alternate life-cycle phase of Papposphaera.

Distinguishing features: Tower-like holococcoliths formed from hexagonal crystallite groups.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Turrisphaera *

Biology & life-cycles: All the described holococcolith species have extremely similar cocoliths and have been shown to form associations with Papposphaera heterococcolith phases.
