Motile cells with two unequal, often anisokont, heterodynamic flagella and a haptonema; the shorter flagellum sometimes reduced to a vestigial structure.] Cells compressed or not compressed; flagella and haptonema inserted ventrally or laterally, the anterior flagellum bearing a garniture of fine hairs alone or fine hairs with small dense bodies; the posterior flagellum often bearing fine hairs but never with dense bodies; the haptonema demonstrating in the free part progressive distal reduction in the number of microtubules from approximately 8 at the base. Stigma present or absent. A pit or canal present penetrating the cell in front of the anterior flagellum, sometimes associated with the stigma, if present.
