Classification: Mesozoic -> Heterococcoliths inc sedis -> Papposphaeraceae -> Pocillithus
Sister taxa: Pocillithus,

Distinguishing features: Minute muroliths with prominent spine, rim non-imbricate typically with serrated distal margin.

Daughter taxa: (blue => in age window 0-800Ma)
rim low with smooth distal margin; central area spanned by cross-bars
rim high, with serrated distal margin,;central area narrow without crossbars

Taxonomy:

Citation: Pocillithus Dunkley Jones, Bown & Pearson 2009
Rank: Genus
Type species: Pocillithus spinulifer Dunkley Jones et al. 2009
Notes & discussion: Pocillithus was described from the Palaeogene but these Turonian species, appear to be very simialr. Placement in the Pappposphaeraceae (an extant family with a very poor fossil record) is more tentative but seems reasonable based on morphology, size and co-occurrence with other deep photic taxa (in Palaeogene). Interestingly P. macleodii shows the serrated rim margin typical of most modern Papposphaeraceae, but not shown by the Paleogene species P. spinulifer.
