Sphenolithus tintinnabulum

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Sphenolithaceae -> Sphenolithus -> S. dissimilis group -> Sphenolithus tintinnabulum
Sister taxa: S. disbelemnos, S. dissimilis, S. procerus, S. tintinnabulum, S. paratintinnabulum, S. truaxii,

Taxonomy:

Citation: Sphenolithus tintinnabulum Maiorano & Monechi 1997
Rank: Species
Notes & discussion: Bergen et al. (2017) describe S. tintinnabulum as having a moncrystalline spine and create a new species for similar forms with a compound spine. However the holotype of S. tintinnabulum clearly has a compound spine, and this is also stated in the type description.

Distinguishing features: Distinctive triangular outline and very short multipartite spine. (NB The name tininnabulum means small bell and describes the shape).
