Sphenolithus umbrellus

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Discoasterales -> Sphenolithaceae -> Sphenolithus -> S. predistentus group -> Sphenolithus umbrellus
Sister taxa: S. ciperoensis, S. distentus, S. predistentus, S. patifunditus, S. bulbulus, S. tawfikii, S. celsus, S. peartiae, S. akropodus, S. tribulosus, S. directus, S. avis, S. umbrellus, S. triangularis, S. intercalaris, S. obtusus,

Citation: Sphenolithus umbrellus (Bukry, 1971) Aubry and Knuttel, in Knuttel 1986
Rank: Species
Basionym: Catinaster umbrellus Bukry, 1971
Notes & discussion: Although this looks like a broken relic of a lrger sphenolith it seems to have a restricted range so it probably is a species in which the upper cycles became reduced

Distinguishing features: Proximal shield only, formed of about ten rays with umbrella-like appearance
