Distinguishing features: A large species of Staurolithites (c. 8µm) with a broad, unicyclic, birefringent rim and blocky, birefringent, largely featureless axial cross

Morphology remarks: The interference colours displayed by rim and cross are typically yellow, with slightly higher colours displayed by the cross bars when orientated at 0° to the polarising directions. In cross-polarised light (XPL) the rim appears unicyclic but is crossed by spiral extinction lines, particularly clear at either end of the coccolith. In phase contrast illumination (PC) a bright inner rim cycle may be visible. The coccolith appearance changes little on rotation, although the cross bars appear darker, thinner and striate at 45°.

Size: Length 7.2-8.0 µm, width 5.7-6.4 µm.
