Stephanolithion atmetos

Classification: Mesozoic -> Stephanolithiales -> Stephanolithiaceae -> Stephanolithion -> Stephanolithion atmetos
Sister taxa: S. atmetos, S. bigotii, S. brevispinus, S. hexum, S. speciosum, S. sp.,

Distinguishing features: Narrowly elliptical, near-parallel sided Stephanolithion with tranverse bar spanning the narrow central area.

Taxonomy:

Citation: Stephanolithion atmetos Cooper, 1987
Rank: Species
Variants: Paractinozygus gorodishchensis Cooper 1987 = Stradnerlithus gorodishchenis (Cooper 1987) Bown & Cooper 1989 - similar but more broadly elliptical. [my interpretation - JRY 2016]
Notes & discussion: The epithet has been variably spelt atmetos and atmetros as a result of some confusion in the original publication. It is based on the classical greek word atmetos (undivided) so the correct spelling is atmetos. The corrected spelling was used by Bown & Cooper 1998, although it was not explained there.
