Vexillarius cancellifer

Classification: Coccolithophores -> Coccolith families inc sed -> Papposphaeraceae -> Vexillarius -> Vexillarius cancellifer
Sister taxa: V. acerviphora, V. cancellifer, V. cereus, V. iaculifer, V. sp.,

Taxonomy:

Citation: Vexillarius cancellifer Jordan & Chamberlain, 1992
Rank: Species
Notes & discussion: Andruleit & Jordan (2016) illustrate well-preserved specimens, and discuss the morphology and likely affinities in some detail.

Distinguishing features: Process flaring distally.

Farinacci & Howe catalog pages: Vexillarius cancellifer *

Morphology remarks: Body coccoliths are small (ca. 1 µm long) narrowly elliptical muroliths. Equatorial coccoliths have similar bases with long (5-7 µm) square section process, parallel sided in lower half then flaring distally, terminated by a quadrate structure.

Ecology & Biogeography: Lower photic zone, very rare.
