NB The short diagnoses are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus. They have initially been copied from the diagnostic characters/distinguishing features sections of the Eocene and Paleocene Atlases, they will be edited as the site is developed.

Diagnostic characters: Low trochospiral, chambers spherical to subspherical

Aperture: : Umbilical large opening with a thin lip [Aze 2011, based on Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Wall type: Spinose; Hispid [Aze 2011]

Test morphology: Test medium to large, low trochospiral; chambers spherical to subspherical, increasing slowly in size as added, five to six in the final whorl; sutures distinctly depressed, often with a reduced final chamber (kummerform). Surface similar to G.  bulloides. Umbilicus very large, deep. Aperture large, umbilical, with a thin lip. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution: Dominantly a temperate species. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Isotope paleobiology: Aze et al. 2011 ecogroup 1 - Open ocean mixed-layer tropical/subtropical, with symbionts. Based on very heavy ∂13C and relatively light ∂18O. Sources cited by Aze et al. 2011 (appendix S3): this study

Most likely ancestor: Globigerina bulloides - at confidence level 3 (out of 5). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983, fig. 8.

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): within N22 zone (0.00-1.93Ma, top in "Holocene" stage). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983 - LAD not well established but not an extant species.
First occurrence (base): within N21 zone (1.93-3.10Ma, base in Piacenzian stage). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983
