Like A. lozanoi but test smaller with 4–5 chambers in the final whorl, looser coiling and a lower spire.
Moderately high, evolute, trochospiral test, 5-6 globular chambers in final whorl; predominantly, intraumbilical aperture.

Taxonomic discussion: The genus Alicantina was proposed by Soldan et al. 2018 for a pair of species (lozanoi) tentatively included in Praemurica by Breggren et al. 2006. They further argued that G. prolata which had been included in P. lozanoi by Berggren et al. 2006 was a discrete species, also assignable to their new genus Alicantina. [editor's comment - JRY 2019]

Description


Wall type: Non-spinose, dutertrei-type, irregularly cancellate.

Test morphology: Trochospiral test, with moderate coiling axis; equatorial periphery moderately elongate to subcircular and the internal spire tends to increase in height; peripheral mar- gin broadly rounded; in spiral view 4–6 (rarely 7) globular chambers in the last whorl increase gradually in size as added; spiral sutures slightly curved to straight, depressed; in um- bilical view chambers subtriangular with strongly depressed, straight sutures; umbilicus deep and medium sized, aperture wide generally intraumbilical, tending to extend extraumbilically; aperture a distinct low to moderately high arch. Biogeography and Palaeobiology


Phylogenetic relations:

Alicantina n. gen. evolved in the early Eocene presumably from a parasubbotinid-like taxon possessing a non-spinose wall texture and left no descendants. [Soldan et al. 2018]
