Description


Test morphology: Test medium, relatively high trochospiral, chambers globular to hemispherical, increasing regularly in size. The final whorl consists of three chambers, sutures radial to curved, depressed; surface smooth, microperforate with extremely fine perforations distributed irregularly (PI. 57, Fig. 8). Primary aperture not visible in the adult; numerous small, rounded secondary apertures, bordered by a rim, almost completely surround the later chambers. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology


Geographic distribution: Tropical to subtropical [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

In modern oceans a common, warm water, species [SCOR WG138]


Phylogenetic relations: Molecular genotypes recognised (data from PFR2 database, June 2017), one genotype only from 18 sequences. References: Ujiié & Lipps 2009.

Similar species: C. nitida is easily distinguished by its microperforate, trochoid test with sutural supplementary apertures completely surrounding the later chambers. [Kennett & Srinivasan 1983]

Most likely ancestor: Globigerinita parkerae - at confidence level 3 (out of 5). Data source: Kennett & Srinivasan 1983, fig 25.
