Original Description
Type species.– Gandolfia subpennyi (Gandolfi, 1955).
Diagnosis. Late Campanian-Maastrichtian lineage of low trochospiral planktic foraminifera with plano-convex tests and peripheral imperforate band bordered by two keels.
Description. Test is very low trochospiral; earlier chambers are globular to subglobular, those of the final whorl petaloid on the spiral side and strongly inflated, with subtriangular to subrectangular-rounded outline. Sutures on the spiral side are depressed throughout in G. subpennyi and depressed towards the central test portion and raised towards the periphery in G. gagnebini and G. wiedenmayeri. Sutures on the umbilical side are distinct, depressed, straight and radial. Test in plano-convex; spiral side is flat, and occasionally depressed in the central portion in G. subpennyi. Peripheral structures consist of one imperforate peripheral bordered by two equally developed keels on all the chambers of the final whorl; the two keels are in incipient stage of development in G. subpennyi, with rope appearance in G. gagnebini and solid appearance in G. wiedenmayeri. Umbilicus is deep and medium-sized, with a diameter of one fourth to nearly one half of the maximum test diameter; periumbilical shoulders occur on all the chambers around the umbilicus. Main aperture has the shape of a medium high arch in umbilical position, and is bordered by one perforate porticus, which can be attached to the earlier chambers across the umbilicus, or previous chamber portici. Chambers are ornamented with pustules and rugosities, which can fuse to form short costellae in G. subpennyi, and elongate and irregular agglomerations of pustules in G. gagnebini and G. wiedenmayeri. Test wall is calcitic, hyaline, simple and reticulately-ridged on the earlier chambers in G. wiedenmayeri, and perforate; pores are circular, with a diameter of 1.5-4.3µm.

Etymology: Genus and lineage named after Dr Rolando Gandolfi for his outstanding contributions in the study of Cretaceous planktic foraminifera.

Remarks. Gandolfia differs from Archaeoglobigerina, its ancestor, mainly by the test shape, which is plano-convex rather than biconvex or slightly asymmetrical. The species in the Gandolfia directional lineage present coarser ornamentation (short costellae in G. subpennyi and elongate or irregular structures on the spiral side in G. gagnebini and G. wiedenmayeri); its ornamentation sharply differs from the pustulose one of Archaeoglobigerina.
