Test morphology: Remarks: Gallitellia vivans has globular chambers and deeply depressed sutures. Its aperture is a small symmetric arc at the base of the last chamber. Some full grown specimens show the development of multiserial chambers. [Kroon & Nederbragt 1990]

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Geographic distribution: Gallitellia vivans has been reported from Recent and Quaternary sediments in the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, Indonesia and the Gulfof Mexico. We found living G. vivans in Snellius Cruise G0 plankton tow samples (see Fig. 2). [Kroon & Nederbragt 1990]

Isotope paleobiology: G. vivans is a member of the planktic foraminiferal population; its 18O/16O ratio is ~ 5.3ppt, lighter than that of the benthics and lies between those of G. trilobus and G. menardii. It appears that G. vivans lives somewhat deeper in the water column than the surface dwelling spinose species, but its exact vertical position remains unclear, since the magnitude of the vital effect on the oxygen isotope ratios is unknown. From the oxygen isotopic data and its distribution pattern we conclude that G. vivans is a planktic species, that is brought to the surface in upwelling ares or, to a lesser extent, by mixing at the base of the thermocline [Kroon & Nederbragt 1990]

Phylogenetic relations: Molecular genetic data of Ujiie et al. (2018) indicates that G. vivans is unrelated to other extant planktonic forminifera and closest to the benthic foraminifera Stainforthia. It thus represents a separate adoption of planktonic habitat. It is also well separated from Streptochilus.
