Original Description
The fairly large and robust test (0.40 to 0.50 mm average diameter) consists of five chambers per whorl, with 5 to 6 chambers in the last whorl visible ventrally, arranged in 2 1/2 to 3 whorls, in a high loosely coiled trochospire. The chambers are globular; a modified larger, grotesque last chamber is generally present. The aperture possesses a well-developed lip extending from umbilicus to periphery. The wall is thick, perforate, and the sutures are radial and narrow.

Size: "Dimensions. - Holotype (fig. 10a, b): Diameter 0.50 mm. Paratypes (unfigured): Diameter range 0.37 to 0.45 mm.

Extra details from original publication
The new species resembles G. pachyderma but can be distinguished from the latter by its larger size, number of chambers, outline of test, which is circular in G. paraobesa and subquadrate in G. pachyderma, and its modified larger last chamber. The coiling direction of this taxon is predomi- nantly sinistral (average: 98% sinistral, based on 19 sample counts in core T 3-67-3).

Distribution: G. paraobesa is present throughout the studied Arctic cores in units I, II, and III sediments at low frequencies, constituting 0.1 to 1.5% of the planktonic foraminiferal population.
