Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Phylogenetic relations: Barbieri (1967) considered Gr. (G.) puncticulata to be closely related to Gr. crassaformis. Stainforth et al. (1975) suggested that Gr. (G.) puncticulata may be a descendant of Globorotalia subscitula, and Berggren (1977b) suggested that its ancestry is from Gr. cibaoensis. Detailed biometric studies of this lineage by Malmgren and Kennett (1981) demonstrate that Gr. (G.) puncticulata evolved in the Early Pliocene from Gr. (G.) conomiozea via Gr. (G.) sphericomiozea and in turn gave rise to Gr. (G.) inflata during the Late Pliocene. Gr. (G.) puncticulata is distinguished from Gr. (G.) inflata by having not fewer than 4 chambers in the final whorl,in exhibiting less inflation, and a smaller aperture.
