Original Description
The new subgenus Jenkinsella represents a phyletically continuous group of latest Paleogene to Neogene forms usually referred to as Turborotalia (Blow, 1969; Fleisher, 1974). However, as pointed out by Srinivasan and Kennett (1981a), Turborotalia with type species Globorotalia centralis Cushman and Bermudez, is a Paleogene lineage and is phyletically unrelated to forms here included in Jenkinsella.
Jenkinsella
includes the lineage from Gr. opima to Gr. semivera to Gr. bella to Gr. mayeri to Gr. acrostoma (Text Fig. 19). All of these forms are linked by intermediate morphotypes.
The primary diagnostic features common to all species included within Jenkinsella are that all have a rounded periphery lacking a distinct carina, globular to subglobular chambers arranged in a compact, low trochospire, and an umbilical-extraumbilical aperture bordered by a rim. The surface ultrastructure of Jenkinsella is marked by a dense network of pores surrounded by thickened walls producing a cancellate surface pattern (PI. 42, Fig. 1).
The Jenkinsella lineage seems to have evolved from "Globorotalia" nana like many of the Neogene globorotaliids. Jenkinsella is largely a Neogene lineage and is an important element of the Early and Middle Miocene foraminiferal assemblages. The extinction of Jenkinsella at the top of Zone N14 (late Middle Miocene) provides a useful datum at 11.2 Ma.
