Sister taxa: L. coarctata, L. convexa, L. hessi, L. sp.,

Citation: Loeblichella hessi (Pessagno, 1962)
Rank: Species
Basionym: Praeglobotruncana hessi hessi
Taxonomic discussion: The aperture on most specimens is difficult to see because it is obscured by hard matrix or large apertural flaps.
Praeglobotruncana hessi hessi n. sp., n. subsp. differs from Praeglobotruncana mattsoni Pessagno in its elongate, slightly more ovate chambers and by its more highly arched aperture. Like P. mattsoni it possesses coarse papillae on its early chambers and large apertural flaps. P. hessi hessi is somewhat similar to P. havanensis (Voorwijk)( = citae Bolli) in the shape of its chambers in both spiral and umbilical views. However, the chambers of P. hessi are wider, much more inflated, and do not show the development of a single keel. [copied from Chronos database]

Type images:

Original description: Spiral side flattened to gently convex, periphery lobulate, chambers increasing rapidly in size; nepionic chambers spherical, later chambers becoming markedly ovate; last whorl with 5-6 chambers; early chambers usually coarsely spinose; last 2-3 chambers smooth; sutures depressed, radial, slightly curved on both spiral and umbilical sides. Aperture interiomarginal; appers to be a low arch extraumbilical-umbilical in position; large apertural flaps extend into a broad umbilicus from each chamber.

Plot of occurrence data:

Dec 2017 - Plotting of Neptune data has been re-enabled on the Mesozoic pages following revision of the age-models in Neptune. The data is, however, still very sparse for the Early Cretaceous
