Editors' Notes
Rosalina marginata was described from Czech Republic sequences by Reuss (1845) as having umbilical “small deep sutures” (English translation from German by Neagu, 2012), but the three type specimens were poorly illustrated and lack lateral views (here re-illustrated in Fig. 7, 5-7). Later, Reuss (1854) found the same species in Austria and clarified marginata species concept by re-describing the species and by illustrating three views of a specimen clearly having radial and depressed sutures on the umbilical side and two closely spaced keels (here re-illustrated in Fig. 7, 3A-C). Unfortunately, the emended description of marginata by Reuss (1854) was mainly overlooked in the literature and the species was largely misidentified (Neagu, 2012). Further confusion was introduced by Jirova (1956) who selected a neotype of marginata having distinct U-shaped keeled sutures on the umbilical side (Fig. 7, 4A-C) out of an assemblage from the type locality while, in the same year, Hofker (1956) erected marginata Reuss as the type species of the genus Marginotruncana. Although the morphological features shown by the neotype are substantially different from the type material of marginata selected by Reuss, (see Pessagno, 1967), the former species concept has been widely accepted in the literature (see Robaszynski et al., 1979). In 2012, Neagu remarked on the morphological differences between the type species, as emended by Reuss (1854) and Jirova's neotype, and assigned the species marginata to the genus Dicarinella Porthault (1970) according to the presence of depressed sutures on the umbilical side. Consequently, Neagu (2012) erected the new species pseudomarginata for Jirova's neotype and assigned it to the genus Marginotruncana on the basis of the umbilical keeled U-shaped sutures.
