Original Description
Approximately spherical shell, the lattice having an irregular surface and bearing two types of spines - long, thicker ones, irregularly wavy in form, acute, and usually conspicuously widened at the surface of the lattice; and numerous shorter, thinner ones. Within the shell is a spicule consisting generally of two sets of three rays each (rarely, one group of three rays and one group of four), joined by a short connecting bar.
Etymology: From the Greek oros = hill; and dapis = carpet or rug, an allusion to the numerous short spines.
