Taxonomy

Citation: Conochitinidae Eisenack, 1931 emend. Paris, 1981
Taxonomic rank: family
Basionym: Conochitinidae Eisenack, 1931

Catalog entries: Conochitinidae

Original description: Family Conochitinidae n. fam.
Generally conical in shape; the greatest diameter is near the distal end.
This rather morphologically diverse family is closely related to the previous family (e.g., Conochitina micracantha and Conochitina lagenomorpha), but also shows affinities with the next family, the Desmochitinidae.
Eisenack, 1931

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (ct_main):
This taxon: flexure inconspicuous

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Emended description:
Diagnosis: Slender chitinozoans; neck and chamber poorly differentiated; internal prosome, simple or complex, not functional in inter-chamber connection; chamber cylindroid, cylindro-conical or club-shaped; double wall; test smooth (surface may be polished, roughened or felt-like) or ornamented (tuberculate, spiny or hairy); possible presence of a carina, appendages, a mucron or a copula; chains are infrequent.
This family includes five subfamilies: Conochitininae, Belonechitininae, Tanuchitininae, Eremochitininae, and Spinachitininae.

Paris, 1981

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of Late Devonian Period (100% up, 359.3Ma, in Early Carboniferous stage). Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database
First occurrence (base): within Early Ordovician Epoch (471.26-486.85Ma, base in Tremadocian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
