Taxonomy

Citation: Desmochitinidae Eisenack, 1931, emend. Paris, 1981
Taxonomic rank: family
Basionym: Desmochitinidae Eisenack, 1931

Catalog entries: Desmochitinidae

Original description: Family Desmochitinidae, new family (=Chain.)
Several bubble- or bottle-shaped individuals are united into a chain-like colony. The terminal vesicle, called the primary vesicle, has a distinct base (possibly an attachment disc?) and thus a shape that differs from the rest.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (ct_main):
This taxon: no neck

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Emended description:
Diagnosis: Small-sized chitinozoans; neck absent; collar may be present or absent; operculum simple and discoidal or extended with a membranous fringe, located externally (flush with the oral margin) or at the base of the collar; chamber lenticular, spheroidal, cylindro-ovoid or conoidal; double wall; test smooth (surface may be polished, roughened, felt-like or spongy) or ornamented (cones, spines or hairs); possible presence of a simple or fenestrated carina; mucron or copula may be present; chains are frequent.
This family includes four subfamilies: DesmochitininaeMargachitininaeEisenackitininae, and Pterochitininae

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of Late Devonian Period (100% up, 359.3Ma, in Early Carboniferous stage). Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database
First occurrence (base): within Early Ordovician Epoch (471.26-486.85Ma, base in Tremadocian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
