Taxonomy

Citation: Lagenochitinidae Eisenack, 1931 emend. Paris, 1981
Taxonomic rank: family
Basionym: Lagenochitinidae Eisenack, 1931
Type species: Genus Lagenochitina

Catalog entries: Lagenochitinidae

Original description: Family Lagenochitinidae n. fam.
Bottle-shaped form. The greatest width is not near the distal end, but rather located more toward the middle of the longitudinal axis. The bottle-shaped chamber gradually transitions into a neck-like section. Aperture smooth.
Eisenack, 1931

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (ct_main):
This taxon: flexure conspicuous

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Emended description:
Diagnosis: Medium-sized chitinozoans; neck and chamber differentiated; internal prosome, simple or complex, not functional in inter-chamber connection; chamber lenticular, conoidal, ovoid or cylindroid; test smooth (surface may be polished, roughened, felt-like or spongy) or ornamented (tuberculate, spiny, hairy); possible presence of a carina (simple or reticulated) or appendages; chains are very rare.
This family includes five subfamilies: LagenochitininaeUrochitininaeAngochitininaeAncyrochitininae, and Cyathochitininae.

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of Devonian Period (100% up, 359.3Ma, in Early Carboniferous stage). Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database
First occurrence (base): within Early Ordovician Epoch (471.26-486.85Ma, base in Tremadocian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
