Taxonomy

Citation: Margachitininae Paris, 1981
Taxonomic rank: subfamily
Basionym: Margachitininae Paris, 1981
Type species: Genus Margachitina

Catalog entries: Margachitininae

Original description: Diagnosis: Glabrous Desmochitinidae (vesicle surface smooth, shagreen-like, or microtuberculate); chamber spheroidal-lenticular to cylindro-ovoid; collar may be present or absent; copula always developed, ending in a peduncular disc of variable width; inter-chamber connections very resistant.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Desmochitinidae): no neck
This taxon: copula

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of Late Devonian Period (100% up, 359.3Ma, in Early Carboniferous stage). Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database
First occurrence (base): within Early Ordovician Epoch (471.26-486.85Ma, base in Tremadocian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
