Taxonomy

Citation: Pterochitininae Paris, 1981
Taxonomic rank: subfamily
Basionym: Pterochitininae Paris, 1981
Type species: Pterochitina

Catalog entries: Pterochitininae

Original description: Diagnosis: Glabrous Desmochitinidae (smooth, finely granulated or finely reticulated surface); chamber spheroidal-lenticular to cylindro-ovoid; collar may be present or absent; membranous carina, simple or reticulated, always present, located either at the equatorial, peri-basal, or sub-basal position; mucron may be present or absent; inter-chamber connections fairly resistant.

Distinguishing features:
Parent taxon (Desmochitinidae): no neck
This taxon: carina

NB These concise distinguishing features statements are used in the tables of daughter-taxa to act as quick summaries of the differences between e.g. species of one genus.
They are being edited as the site is developed and comments on them are especially welcome.

Description

Biogeography and Palaeobiology

Biostratigraphic distribution

Geological Range:
Last occurrence (top): at top of Middle Devonian Period (100% up, 382.7Ma, in Givetian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database
First occurrence (base): within Ordovician Period (443.07-486.85Ma, base in Tremadocian stage). Data source: Total of ranges of species in this database

Plot of occurrence data:
NB The ranges given for genera and higher taxa are the total ranges of species included in that taxon in this database - so the true total range of the taxon will usually be longer
